Talk About Through

Question from Robin:
My goodness, I didn’t mean to require such extensive responses! But then I realized you posted these answers so all could benefit. From now on I will try to send questions to patwelsh.com. I do appreciate your time in answering. I can so hear ‘your voice’ in both your book and blogs etc. I find it so joyful. LOVE that you now have videos on your website. PLEASE continue adding whenever you can. Don’t know if prior clips can be used from TV etc. but that would be wonderful too. Guess I’m a Pat Welsh junkie. My husband and I call you the Julie Child’s of gardening… I’m sure you’ve heard that 1,000 times.

Answer from Pat:
Thank you so much for saying you find my writing voice “joyful.” It is good to hear that my enthusiasm for plants and gardeners and this wonderful planet of ours come through. Yes, I am joyful and enthusiastic, and yet I also feel deeply that the most important task in life is protecting this planet from the ravages that we human beings are subjecting it to. My way to help is to teach organic gardening, closeness to the earth, and how to garden without pesticides, poisons, and synthetic fertilizers. People are dying from cancer and other ills and humans try to find chemical drugs to heal them. My thought is we need to heal the planet and then folks won’t so often get sick and die before their appropriate time. My philosophy is that we are here for more than one lifetime and that we are connected to each other, to plants, and to the earth, the seas and the entire biosphere. I think we come back here many times. Thus we must care for this blessed Earth so we have something to come back to. I don’t know how many other great planets like this one are out there. So we’d better take care of what we’ve got.

Re: more videos. I have already made 6 more of these in Hollywood, working with two of my five grandchildren—Hal (a TV producer; he held the sound boom) and Rebecca (a writer) and Hal’s friend Auggie—(Auggie manned the camera for us). And two of my four great-grandchildren, Rebecca’s and Hal’s children, Archer and Fable took part also. These new videos are on the subject of “Child-Friendly Gardening” and “Cool-Season Crops”. I am eagerly waiting for the Auggie, who was also the editor, to edit these. As soon as they are edited I will post them on my website. But meanwhile, please enjoy this link to my granddaughter Rebecca’s famous blog. I did a guest blog for her on this subject and Rebecca’s photos of that fun day are super. http://www.girlsgonechild.net/2010/09/insideoutside-child-friendly-organic.html

Re: TV, I do this whenever it comes along. You will find these on my blog at the top of the page. Just click on “Media”. Another shoulder replacement (complete reverse replacement of left shoulder), scheduled for November 2, will put me out of commission for a bit, but I should soon be well and strong again.

RE: being another Julia Child, yes I hear that an awful lot, but it seems as if the “powers that be” are more interested in cooking than in plants and gardening, even though the things we cook come out of our gardens. I think Hollywood is missing a big bet. TV has yet to capitalize on the subject of gardening the way it has on the subject of cooking and a few other subjects too. I know it would be great, but I have no idea how to make it happen so I guess it never will happen. Meanwhile, I do what I can to promote a good message and make people laugh and feel happy.
