Columnar Aspen

Gardening Question From Barb:

I have a group of columnar aspens in my yard and this year they have grown huge leaves at the very top.  The leaves are easily 5 times larger than the other leaves and have appeared only on the new growth.  The trees are bent over on the top due to the weight of these monster leaves.  Why did this happen?  Should I prune that new growth off to avoid this problem next year? I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
