Bugs & Insects to ID
Question from Mark:
Here are some bugs/insects I have found in my orange and pomelo trees. Are they something to worry much about?
Answer from Pat:
The brown bug on the orange tree is a leaf-footed bug (Leptoglossus fulvicornis) similar to a conifer seed bug or box elder bug, which are also leaf-footed bugs. Most likely it blew over onto your citrus tree from some other favorite tree or shrub. These are not a problem on citrus. Conifer seed bugs and box elder bugs are seasonal if you have pine trees or elder trees nearby. Don’t worry about it, and certainly don’t spray, which would kill beneficials, such as the one in your other photo which appears to be a young praying mantid—(the green bug shown on your other photo.) Don’t kill that one since it’s beneficial.
I should add that if you live in Florida, there are some leaf-footed bugs that damage citrus fruit there. In any case, I think you should report this bug to your local University Extension and ask them what to do about it. If it is an invasive pest in your area you definitely need to report it.
