Tree for north facing bed
Question from Kristina:
We’re looking for a fast growing tree or tall shrub to plant in a north facing bed that will not shade the lawn.
Answer from Pat:
I suggest camellias as the finest tree to plant in a north-facing bed. Whereas most people think of camellias as shrubs, they actually grow as tall as trees. They will give you years of joy with winter flowers and never shade your lawn. ‘Glen 40’ is a fast-growing Camellia japonica. ‘Buttermint’ is a fast-growing white camellia. ‘Maiden’s Bush’ is a vigorous sasanqua camellia.
Another thought is Magnolia ‘Little Gem’. This magnolia is compact and grows upright instead of spreading. It will grow in a north-facing bed or even a large (6’X6′) raised bed and will not spread out and shade your lawn.
