Community Gardens
Question from Andrea:
My question is about planting in a community garden raised bed. I live in a apartment with very limited planting space. My love for gardening is so strong I am looking into a local community garden to be able to grow more veggies for my family to enjoy. But I have never done this before, so should I be concerned about what the prior occupant was growing and will it effect my plants. The rules in the garden are strict including only organic gardening. Thanks so much. Love your site and have learned slot from you already.
Answer from Pat:
You are very lucky to have a community garden close enough for your use. No, nothing any other gardener planted will make any difference to your crops. Short of their using weed killers, pre-emergents such as corn gluten meal (which prevents seeds from sprouting) or pouring salt on the ground you should have nothing to fear! I would leap at the chance if I were you. Remember to amend the soil in the beds each time prior to planting by adding compost and organic fertilizers. Good luck and high enjoyment to you! Thanks so much for your kind comments.
