Sounds as if you did everything right since you got the bulbs at the right time of year and
chilled them and planted them at the correct times of year. And, yes, since you dug the bulbs
up and cleaned them off you now need to subject them to two full months of winter chill in the
refrigerator. Just put them into a brown paper bag and put them into the refrigerator, not the
freezer and be sure to mark the bag with a pen "Not Onions don't EAT!" so no one will think they
are edible. Then plant them out in the garden in January. Yes, indeed, as you said why not?

Put some bone meal or "bulb food" under each bulb with a little
earth on top and then the bulb. Or try them in pots again. Be sure to darken the pots under boxes
and water regularly until the sprouts are up 3 or 4 inches, then lets just see if they bloom. It will be interesting.
Please write me back and tell me. Okay? This did not work for me when I tried it but might for you.
I read once that the trick is to allow the bulbs to be totally dry in the summer as they are in their native
habitat. (Species tulips originally came from Turkey and the Middle East.)

I'm not sure when Terry's mom brought her back her bulbs...but I had a friend who gave me the same gift, probably in Sept. I chilled the bulbs in the fridge until January; planted them in big pots; got beautiful flowers, mostly yellow and yellow/red! (We're in Yorba Linda.) After they'd finished blooming, I dug up the bulbs, dried them out in the sun, and they are now awaiting their new fate. I know; I know. They probably won't bloom again. But should I refrigerate them now until Dec-Jan and try? I mean, why not? But how much chill time do they really need?
Thanks!

Thank you for your response! It was such a nice and thorough explanation, and it confirmed what I thought. I love your books and advice. I saw you speak at Roger's Gardens about 10 years ago..
Thanks again,
Terry
